A Brief Note from the Sausalito Sister Cities Newly Elected President, Dana Cilmi

Greetings Sausalito Sister Cities:

Families, Friends, Board of Directors, Viña del Mar, Chile; Sakaide, Japan and Cascais, Portugal Operations Councils & Volunteers, and Sausalito City Council Liaisons; Susan Cleveland-Knowles and Melissa Blaustein,

A Happy Spring to All! May this season find you inspired to create new and wonderful pathways to celebrate your families, friends, communities and our sisters and brothers around the world.

These unprecedented times present a tremendous opportunity to reflect upon what it truly means to be Stewards and Citizens of our Planet. As Sister Cities we are an inherently Global Community. Now, more than ever, is the time to investigate, understand and create solutions to our common global goals and challenges. Through People to People Diplomacy, we can strengthen partnerships between the U.S. and International Communities which is the mission of the Sister City Program introduced by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956. Sausalito Sister Cities is committed to these conversations with our Sister Cities, local communities, U.S. Sister Cities and with the Sister Cities International (SCI) organization as well.

Sausalito Sister Cities Program Updates

For additional details please visit the “News” section of the website.

Currently our SSCI Viña del Mar, Sakaide and Cascais exchange programs are on hold. Please visit our website for information and updates.

Viña del Mar, Chile

Celebrated International Women’s Day on March 8th with a commemoration and salute to two influential women:

Viña del Mar celebrates Gabriela Mistral, the first Latin American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature while Sausalito remembers our very own legend, Sally Stanford. A wonderful and informative Zoom exchange was enjoyed by all!

Cascais, Portugal

The Sausalito-Cascais Sister City organization, in conjunction with the Sausalito Youth Sailing Foundation, is pleased to host the Daniel Pereira Cristo Sextet, a Portuguese “world beat” ensemble here in Sausalito on Saturday, October 2, 2021. Stay tuned for further details, information and ticket sales.

Sakaide, Japan

Sakaide participants spent the summer of 2020 working on a “digital exchange”, where each city sent videos to the other showing the activities and places they may have experienced had they been able to visit with one another.

Board of Director and Operations Councils Update:

Sausalito City Council Sea Level Rise Task Force Team and Sausalito Sister Cities engage in conversation:

Recently, SSCI representatives, Karen Aiken, Cathy Stierhoff, Viña del Mar; Chris Gallagher, Sakaide; Jim Meyer, Cascais and Dana Cilmi met with the Sausalito City Council Sea Level Rise task force leaders, Mayor Jill James Hoffman, Vice Mayor Janelle Kellman and several Sea Level task force members to discuss a partnership between the Sausalito City Council, and our sister cities to address the challenges of Sea Level Rise, which confronts us all as we are all coastal cities and towns.

This partnership presents an opportunity to have progressive climate change conversations in order to explore critical solutions to our ever-changing environments.

Please take a moment to visit the new County website about Sea Level Rise on Richardson Bay: “Richardson Bay Resilience”

The SSCI new donation management platform Give Lively up and running:

“Charitable giving climbed to nearly $450 billion1 in 2019 and initial reports suggest an increase in charitable giving in 20202, from a surprisingly wide and diverse donor base. Nonprofits found themselves in greater need than ever before, and it inspired impressive generosity—resulting in the unprecedented participation of small donors, individuals and households in fundraising.” (1, 2 Report: The State of Nonprofit Fundraising April 2021)

With these statistics in mind, SSCI has implemented a robust fundraising and donation management platform that will allow us to take advantage of digital fundraising while engaging in compelling exchanges with our individual and corporate donors. In addition, SSCI will utilize the new platform to support all future live and online fundraising efforts as well.

I would like to send a big shout out to Board Member Vasco Morias, our Treasurer Anne Teller, and our Web Mistress Elliot Olson for their invaluable knowledge and assistance with facilitating the implementation of this site so quickly and effortlessly!
