We have an exciting project in the making! We are proposing to transform the Excelsior Stairs (located on Bridgeway, the main downtown thoroughfare, directly across from Viña del Mar Park) into a colorful mural celebrating Sausalito’s sister city relationship with Viña del Mar.
The somewhat worn stairs, to be christened the “Viña del Mar Stairs,” will become a creative beacon, with bright graphics and cultural motifs. The revitalized stairs will invite residents and visitors to pause, take photos, and wander into nearby cafés and shops. The stairs are on a heavily traveled pedestrian sidewalk, so it is perfectly positioned to amplify not only community pride and tourism, but our long-time bond with Viña del Mar.
Downtown businesses continue to recover from pandemic shocks and economic headwinds. Murals are proven attractions and this mural’s location will encourage visitors and locals alike to stop and explore. Murals build shared ownership, tell local history, draw foot traffic and spark social sharing – fueling retail sales and revitalization. As free public art, the project advances equity and welcomes every passerby into Sausalito’s story.

We have kicked off our fundraising effort for this project with the receipt of a grant from the County of Marin. We have also received at least one donation from a resident. We plan to do a vigorous campaign of soliciting grant monies and donations from the community.
