In 2024, the Sausalito-Sakaide Sister City Exchange Program continued 36 years of proud tradition fostering cultural understanding and friendship between Sausalito, California, and Sakaide, Japan by sending a delegation of 12 Marin County high school students to live with Japanese host families for 2 weeks while experiencing a crash course of cultural activities to expand their horizons and foster a new generation of internationally-minded leaders.

Our student delegates engaged in various interesting and cultural activities including kimono fitting, traditional tea ceremony, flower arranging, kayaking, public speaking, dancing in a parade, udon and mochi making, training with fire fighters, and much more.

By all the returning delegates’ reports, this was an experience that greatly and positively impacted their lives and will shape their path through life for decades to come.

In 2025, the Sausalito-Sakaide Sister City Exchange Program will welcome a delegation of high school students from Sakaide, Japan to stay with host families in Sausalito as they experience all the best that our corner of the world has to offer.

Our program is entirely run by volunteers and supported by community donations. If you would like to get involved in our program, either as a volunteer, a donor, or a host family, or if you have an idea or an opportunity for an activity that Sakaide’s upcoming delegation might enjoy in 2025, please reach out and get to know us! Our program only survives and thrives with the help of our community!
